What KeelReel is

KeelReel plays videos from a Keel node: a media server you run on your own computer, next to your Urbit planet. The app streams and downloads from your node. It does not host or sell videos.

Watch the free showcase

No node yet? On the first screen, tap Watch the free showcase. It streams public-domain and Creative Commons films from our server, with no pairing and no account. When you pair your own node, it replaces the showcase.

Pair your own node

Your phone reaches your node through your own Tailscale network, so your node is never open to the internet.

  1. Install Tailscale on the computer that runs your node and on your phone, and sign in to the same Tailscale account on both.
  2. On the computer, publish the phone API: tailscale serve --bg --https=7430 http://127.0.0.1:7430.
  3. In your node's config, set client_listen to 127.0.0.1:7430 and client_url to your computer's Tailscale address, such as https://my-mac.example.ts.net:7430. Restart the node.
  4. Open your node's library page, then Storage and sharing, then Pair a phone.
  5. In KeelReel, scan the QR code, or type the address and the 8-character code.

Fix a problem

  • Can't reach your node: check that Tailscale is on and signed in on both the phone and the computer, and that the node is running.
  • Code expired or already used: a pairing code works once and for 10 minutes. Make a new one on the library page.
  • A video stutters: pick a lower quality in the player, or download it first on Wi-Fi.
  • Still stuck: close and reopen KeelReel, install the latest app and operating system updates, then email us.

Privacy

Read the KeelReel Privacy Policy to see what the app sends to your node and to the showcase server.
